For many people the thought of meditation is a grueling and confusing exercise. ‘How do people just sit down and shut their minds down?’
Have you ever thought of adopting the purpose of meditation and modifying the practice to suit you? For a large part meditation is about taking time out of the day for you to be in the moment by yourself and to be aware of how you are feeling at that moment.
A good way to find out what your meditation style is, is to ask yourself ‘when am I my calmest?’ and I realise that for many people it may be when they are getting a massage, but you can’t get one of those everyday so move on to the next option.
It might be when you’re at the gym, walking the dog, cooking, cleaning or maybe even in the shower. Whatever it is take that time to enjoy the moment ask yourself ‘how am I today?’ just let everything and everyone fade into the background. Tune in to that little voice inside because whoever that little person is they may just know better than mother.
Remember to be patient with yourself like anything new it may be difficult at the beginning and you may even feel guilty about being selfish and taking time for yourself, but it does get easier the more you do it and you learn to enjoy your own company. Who knows you might even make it to the point of sitting cross-legged on a yoga mat for thirty minutes.
